Section 8 Rental Assistance

The South Central MN Multi-County HRA offers Section 8 Rental Assistance in Martin, Nicollet, Sibley, Waseca, and Watonwan counties.
The Section 8 Rental Assistance Program will help you pay your rent if you are an income eligible family or individual. Eligible families and individuals select there own rental units. These units must meet the program's housing quality standards (compliance is determined by a physical inspection of the rental unit) and landlords must be willing to participate in the program. Tenants receive rental assistance based on income and household size. Eligible families or individuals pay 30% to 40% of their gross annual income towards the gross rent. South Central MN Multi-County HRA pays the balance of the rent.

HOW DOES THE WAITING LIST WORK?
There is no accurate way to predict the length of time you will have to wait. The date your application is received and vouchers available each month affect how long it will take. After your application is received and reviewed, you will be sent a letter informing you of your position on the waiting list.

HOW DOES THE PROGRAM WORK?
  1. Complete a preliminary application for rental assistance and return the application to South Central MN Multi-County HRA.

  2. If you are eligible based on the information provided on your application your name will be placed on the waiting list.

  3. When your name comes to the top of the waiting list, your income/assets will be be verified. Eligible families and individuals will then be given a Section 8 Voucher.

  4. You then find a suitable unit.

  5. Discuss the rental assistance program with the owner and then contact the HRA.

  6. A certified inspector will then come to inspect your rental unit.

  7. If the rental unit is suitable according to minimum housing quality standards and passes inspection additional paperwork will be completed by the owner, tenant, and the HRA.

  8. As a participant in the Section 8 Rental Assistance Program you will pay 30% to 40% of your gross annual income towards your gross rent.

  9. The South Central MN Multi-County HRA will then pay the balance of the rent.
